Tired Eyes From Screens? 9 Habits That Actually Help

If your eyes feel heavy by evening after a day on a laptop and phone, you're not alone. These nine habits are free, take seconds, and make long screen days easier.

Eye doctors call it digital eye strain: tired, dry or uncomfortable eyes after long periods of screen use. It usually eases with rest. The habits below lower how much strain builds up in the first place.

1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. It gives the focusing muscles in your eyes a short rest. Set a repeating reminder on your phone or laptop for the first week until it becomes automatic.

2. Blink on purpose

People blink much less while staring at a screen. Every so often, close your eyes fully and slowly, as if you're about to sleep, then open them. Do it five times. It spreads your natural tears across the eye.

3. Put your screen at the right distance and height

  • Keep your laptop or monitor about an arm's length away.
  • The top of the screen should be at or a little below eye level.
  • If you use a laptop all day, a cheap stand and separate keyboard help a lot.

4. Match screen brightness to the room

A screen much brighter or darker than the room makes your eyes work harder. In the evening, turn brightness down and use dark mode or the night-light setting.

5. Fix glare

Don't sit with a bright window directly behind or in front of your screen. Place the screen side-on to windows, and use a soft desk lamp rather than one harsh tube light overhead.

6. Make text bigger

If you lean in to read, the text is too small. Zoom to 110–125% in your browser. It's one of the easiest changes you can make.

7. Take real breaks, not phone breaks

Switching from laptop to phone isn't a break for your eyes. Once every hour or two, take five to ten minutes away from all screens: walk, stretch, look out of a window, or close your eyes. A heated eye massager makes that break more pleasant and stops you reaching for your phone.

Ten screen-free minutes with your eyes closed is a real break.

8. Drink water and watch the AC

Air conditioning and fans dry out your eyes. Keep water at your desk, and avoid sitting with an AC vent blowing at your face.

9. Give your evenings a screen-free ending

Scrolling right up to sleep keeps your eyes and mind busy. Try putting your phone away 20–30 minutes before bed. Read a paper book, listen to music, or use an eye massager with calm sounds, then lights off.

When to see an eye doctor

Book an eye check-up if you have headaches that keep coming back, blurred or double vision, eye pain, or redness that doesn't settle. You may need glasses for computer distance, or have something that needs treatment. Most people who work on screens benefit from a check-up every one to two years.

Enmode is a wellness and relaxation device, not a medical product. If your eyes hurt, look red, water a lot, or your vision changes, see an eye doctor instead of using a massager.
